GALLERY PROFILE: BLYTHE PROJECTS

Focusing On Young And Emerging Painters, Hillary Metz Is Establishing A New Prototype For California Galleries
by Alexandria Sivak

Blythe Projects is a new breed of gallery that not only embraces the regional arts community—but also has such fresh appeal and serious young artists that it is attracting the attention of important collectors throughout California.

“The desire to bring exciting, soulful artists for collectors and arts enthusiasts is why we relocated to Culver City, one of California’s most respected arts districts,” says owner Hillary Metz. The building provides 3,000 square feet of exhibition space.

Founded in 2009, Blythe Projects has quickly become the prototype for a new generation of galleries in Southern California. Described as “that small space where Leonard Cohen meets Led Zeppelin”, the gallery focuses on late- emerging and early mid-career painters based in Los Angeles.

Metz previously directed a prominent contemporary gallery in Santa Fe, mounting 12 exhibitions a year. Blythe Projects offers her the freedom to develop a creative space with a sharp critical edge. The artists she selects often represent the contemporary design sensibilities of Southern California home owners. “We represent artists that work at the intersections of Abstract Expressionism and Pop,” she says. “Our streak of sophisticated psychedelia emerges from our shared interests in music and spirituality.”

One of the artists is Michael Salvatore Tierney, who was granted unprecedented permission to photograph NASA research facilities. Established painter Larry Mullins chose Blythe Projects to launch his most recent body of work. John Andolsek left the comforts of northern New Mexico to present his work at the 2010 fall opening exhibition. Metz cultivates artist and patron loyalty through ambitious exhibitions and inspired conversations and collaborations.

Blythe Projects is located at 5797 Washington Blvd. in Culver City. For more information, call 323.272.3642 or visit www.blytheprojects.net
